In this sequel to Cobb Island paranormal researchers Kayla Redding and Olivia Hazelwood begin their professional and personal partnership as they tackle their first case together in the world's most haunted city — Edinburgh, Scotland. While in Edinburgh, the women visit the Cobb family ancestral home. The Cobb family historian takes the women on a journey back through time to 17th Century Colonial Virginia. He weaves the tale of Faylinn Cobb, explaining what happened to her and her family after her sister-in-law, Bridget Redding, was branded a witch.
Despite fan mail insisting that there was more story to tell, I resisted the idea of a sequel for Cobb Island for months and months. But a visit to England and Scotland put a bug in my head that wouldn't die. And for that, I'm grateful. In Echoes I was able to incorporate a major plot-twist that shocked and delighted many readers. At the end of the tale you might very well be left shaking your head and asking yourself why you didn't see it coming. Go back and read it again. The clues are all there.
Settling on a book cover for this novel was an arduous proces. The cover designer and I went through cover after cover but nothing was working. No single photograph was working. And the last thing we wanted was a cover that looked busy. Finally, we went back to basics, and I was able to locate a very simple photograph that conveyed the sense of mystery that I was after. Callie took it from there and the result is a cover that fits the eerie, mystical quality of the book perfectly.
I'm not much of a thriller fan and when you add in the paranormal my eyes start to glaze over. Hah, little did I know that Kayla's trip to the Redding estate on Cobb Island was going to take me on a heart-pounding trip into the past and become engrossed in the story of Bridget, a late 17 century ancestor, whose relationship with her sister-in-law Faylinn is marked by her btother's arrogance and cruelty.
As Kayla and Liv huddle together to read the family journal during the midst of a storm, so does the tale of the two women take the reader on a stormy ride as seen through the eyes of their chronicler, Afia. Eventually Kayla and Liv must travel to England to resolve the final threads of Bridget and Faylinn's tale [Echoes in the Mist].
Blayne does a wonderful job of weaving 3 love stories. The yound love of Doug/Marcy, the burgeoning love of Kayla/Liv and the star-crossed love of Bridget/Faylinn. You really need to read both books to get the full treatment and you won't be sorry that you did -- I wasn't. For a great mix of suspense, romance and a touch of the whimsical, these books do not disappoint.
